Movie star Julia Roberts has starred in the latest episode of 'Finding your roots', where they have studied her family tree through DNA files. The person in charge of doing so was Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr and the famous actress was taken by surprise when she was informed of the results.
By digging in the archives of her family, Gates discovered something that she did not know, as he revealed that her last name is not Roberts.
"Digging into Georgia's County archives, we discovered that sometime in the 1850s, Rhoda married a man named Willis Roberts," Gates said.
"Julia carries Willis' last name. But Willis passed away in 1864, over a decade before Rhoda gave birth to Julia's great grandfather, John, leading to an inescapable conclusion."
The historian told the celebrity that he had been digging through the archives but could not find who her great-great-grandfather really was.
"In the end, we found a cluster of matches that tie Julia and her cousin to one man," added Gates, who revealed that the man was called Henry MacDonald Mitchell Jr.
Then, a surprised Roberts asked: "So we're Mitchells?", with Gates confirming that this was the conclusion of his research.
" Truly my mind is blown. It is fascinating," she said.
"And on the other hand there's you know part of me that you know that when I'm calmer, you know can still wrap my arms around the idea that my family is my family."
